If there were ever a time for us to buy a Powerball ticket, I think now would be the time. So many things happening for Sugarcane Jane right now but this just made me check my pulse. We are super excited to have been invited to open for Steve Winwood at the Alys Stephens Performing Arts Center in Birmingham, Alabama on May 2. I would love to believe that this opportunity came from our pure talent & good lucks and maybe it did although we do have a connection to Steve. I say "we" because you can do that when you are married, right? Okay, Anthony has the connection. And I will have to get the full scoop from him in the morning or better yet, allow Mary Colurso or Lawrence Specker to interview him in detail about his relationship with the Winwoods which dates back to at least the late 80's. I do know that he toured with Steve on the "Roll With It" tour (HELLOOOOOO) and cowrote two songs on Steve's About Time album, 'Walking On' and 'Take It To The Final Hour'. He also appeared on "Showtime" with Steve in 1989. They have remained in contact sporatically through the years and Anthony has always spoken very highly of Steve. I remember him always telling me something Steve told him in his best English voice, "Just because someone knocks on your door, doesn't mean you have to open it". Or at least that is my best recollection of the moment. And hey, I just remembered, I DO have my own connection. I cut Steve's wife's song 'Faded Neighborhood' on the new not yet released Willie Sugarcapps album to be released this August! It was a cowrite Anthony did with Gena Winwood. See, I knew I felt a connection!! Powerball anyone?
